Summary: Hephaistion knows his place is with Alexander.

They don't speak.
They don't speak about Roxane. They certainly don't speak about Bagoas. They speak of war and politics and of the ongoing campaign against the barbarians. But the silent reproach is in Hephaistion's blue eyes every time he looks at Alexander. As for Alexander, his eyes are stormy and full of dreams as always, but lately when he looks at Hephaistion his eyes become more turbulent with fear and hurt and that is something that Hephaistion does not like to see.
And so, when Alexander beckons to him, Hephaistion goes, still silently. And only when they lie together in Alexander's tent, decorated with spoils of war and on a pallet covered with furs, does Hephaistion break his silence to moan words of love and loyalty. Alexander holds tight to him throughout the night, promising again that they will be together forever, that Hephaistion's last breath shall be his own and he would only live for vengeance. Hephaistion repeats the words back, because he has always done so, and because he is Alexander, too.
And it is he, Hephaistion, that comforts Alexander's pains. He that smooths his brow and presses fevered kisses to his lips. It is between his thighs that Alexander finds his peace.
And that is something that no one -- not Roxane and not Bagoas -- can ever take away.
